TotalAV, which takes fifth place in our ranking of the best antivirus software for Mac, is a UK-based software company founded in 2016. It manufactures software that provides antivirus, anti-malware, anti-phishing and other protections and tools to clean up and optimize your computer. Some versions have additional features and all are compatible with Windows, MacOS, iOS and Android devices.

popular antivirus software

Best for:

  • Real-time protection that scans your computer for malware

  • highly rated by independent laboratories

  • Disk Cleanup and System Tuning Tools

Not recommended for:

TotalAV aims for a “total” antivirus package for Windows, MacOS, iOS and Android devices. It includes online threat protection, dark web monitoring for your data, disk and browser cleaner, and PC tuning tools. It offers a free edition with limited features. The software gets good scores from independent labs for malware protection, although some reviewers say it’s not as strong as some rivals. It uses the SAVAPI anti-malware engine, which uses a combination of artificial intelligence, cloud technology, and endpoint scanning for real-time protection against viruses, worms, and ransomware. It includes URL blocking to prevent you from being tricked into giving your credentials to fake websites.

Professional reviewers praise TotalAV for a well-designed user interface and full range of features. However, it is more expensive than many rivals. TotalAV offers three paid antivirus options, each with heavily discounted prices for the first year. The standard price ranges from $119 to $179. All packages include malware protection as well as disk cleaner, browser manager, cleaner, and system tuning tools. The more expensive versions add a virtual private network (VPN) and block online ads. However, they don’t offer features like parental controls and cloud storage, which some other software providers include.

TotalAV offers three paid subscriptions in addition to a free limited malware protection plan. Annual plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee, while monthly plans have a 14-day guarantee.

TotalAV Antivirus Pro ($29 for the first year and $119 per year thereafter) covers three devices for one year and includes the following features:

  • Real-time virus protection that scans your computer for viruses and other malware
  • Elimination of Trojans, viruses and other malware
  • Protection against unwanted downloads
  • Defense against phishing with URL verification
  • Ransomware Protection
  • System tuning tools
  • disk cleaner
  • Remote access to your device’s firewall settings
  • Browser manager and cleaner

Total AV Internet Security

A subscription to TotalAV Internet Security ($39 for the first year and $145/year thereafter) covers five devices for one year and includes Antivirus Pro features and a personal VPN.

A TotalAV Total Security subscription ($49 for the first year and $179/year thereafter) covers six devices for one year and includes everything in TotalAV Internet Security plus:

  • Ad blocking
  • password manager

Here are the prices of TotalAV’s antivirus software packages:

  • TotalAV Antivirus Pro: $29/$119 for three devices for a year
  • TotalAV Internet Security: $39/$145 for five devices
  • TotalAV Total Security: $49/$179 for six devices

TotalAV vs. McAfee

Professional reviewers claim that these two software companies both offer solid virus protection. McAfee has a slight edge in malware detection, while TotalAV is said to be faster with a better user interface. McAfee has been around for decades and offers many options at different price points. These include identity theft protection and parental controls, which TotalAV does not offer. McAfee also has a gamer-friendly plan designed to protect you without slowing you down. TotalAV remains a solid choice for reviewers, and some users might prefer having a more limited number of choices.

TotalAV vs. Trend Micro

Trend Micro has a long history dating back to 1998 working with the US government, Interpol and the United Nations. TotalAV is a relatively new company launched in 2016, but both companies score well in independent malware protection tests. Trend Micro gives you a more varied menu of options ranging from a basic, low-cost malware suite to a premium plan with features like parental controls and remote diagnosis and repair. Some reviewers say that TotalAV is better for PC performance because it removes unnecessary files that can slow down your computer. TotalAV also offers free antivirus software with basic protection, which Trend Micro does not offer.
