Marathon County Sheriff’s Department warns of phone scam

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a phone scam in which residents receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the sheriff’s office. The scammer identifies himself as an employee of the sheriff’s office, identifies the recipient’s first and last name, and informs the recipient of the phone call that he has business to transact with the sheriff’s office.

As part of the call, the scammer asks for personal information and asks the recipient to call 715-680-3057, ext. 700, with the requested information. This is not a phone number used by the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.

If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office or the Marathon County Government, and you believe they are not, we recommend that you ask for the name, the department and the person’s phone number and tell them that you will call them back. You can verify the phone number using the phone book on our website at

Scammers often spoof phone numbers, making it look like they are calling from an official entity. However, if you check the number and call back, it will ring at the correct place instead of the scammer’s phone.
