CMCA Announces Open Call for 2023 Biennial – Knox County VillageSoup

ROCKLAND — The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA), 21 Winter St., is inviting submissions for its 2023 biennial exhibition. Submissions will be accepted June 1 through August 15, 2022.

The biennial CMCA is Maine’s oldest statewide juried exhibition, dating back to 1978.

misa jeffereis is assistant curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, where she is curating an exhibition of Mona Chalabi in fall 2022 featuring Kahlil Robert Irving, Tim Portlock and Rachel Youn; co-hosted “Shara Hughes: On Edge” (2021); and programmed the series of outdoor video screenings “Street Views” with exhibitions by Jonathan de Andrade, Oliver Laric, Jennifer West and Marina Zurkow. Jeffereis holds an MA in Art History from Hunter College in New York.

Sarah Montross is Senior Curator at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum where she has worked since 2015. She has curated exhibitions such as “Jeffrey Gibson: Infinite Indigenous Queer Love” (2021) and “Visionary New England” (2020, MIT Press catalogue). She also manages the conservation of the 30-acre sculpture park by arranging new sculptural commissions and rotating large-scale sculpture loans, including installations by Letha Wilson, Wardell Milan and Leeza Meksin. She got her doctorate. from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

Exhibition dates: From January 28 to May 7, 2023

Who can apply: Artists with a close connection to Maine (i.e., full or part-time residents, exhibiting, creating art, or studying in Maine, alumni of artist residency programs at the statewide), working in any medium. Collaborative groups are welcome to apply together. The artist cannot apply more than once. If you are applying as a collaboration, applications from individual artists will not be accepted. Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program are not eligible.

*Please note: as the CMCA receives many applications, preference will be given to artists who have not exhibited at the CMCA in the past two years, including the 2020 Biennale.

How to register: Applications will be accepted online only via the CMCA submission form, which will go live on Wednesday, June 1.

Submission to the 2023 CMCA Biennial is free, thanks to a grant from the Susanne Marcus Collins Foundation.

Applications will be accepted from June 1 to August 15. You will be prompted to create an account and:

• Complete the application. Please provide your contact information, including your mailing address, email, phone number and website. Please describe your Maine connection if your mailing address is outside of Maine.

• Submit a current CV in PDF format. Please do not exceed three pages. Please name the file: Nom_CV.

• Submit a current artist statement in PDF format. Please do not exceed 150 words. Please name the file: Lastname_statement

• Work in all media created within the last two years will be considered. For video, performance, sound or installation works, please consider the physical layout and structure of the CMCA galleries and note the technical requirements. Artists are responsible for technical equipment beyond what CMCA currently has. Project proposals will be considered for new work. Please upload your proposal documents in a single document in the project proposal section. A CMCA floor plan for reference can be found here. • Upload up to 6 images, video and/or audio clips. Up to two of the images can be details. Artists who are members of the CMCA* can submit 4 additional imagesbe it details or other work.
File formats accepted: jpg, pdf, mp3, mp4, mov. Images should be 1920 pixels on the longest side. Audio and video files must not exceed 10 MB. Links to videos are also accepted.
Please name the files: number_name_title_year of work. The works must be numbered in the order in which you wish to see them. For numbers 1 to 9, please add a leading zero. For example: 01_Doe_Untitled_2022.jpg or 02_Doe_Untitled_detail_2022.jpg.

• Submit a PDF image description listing, including title, date, medium, and inch dimensions (height x width x depth) in numerical order corresponding to the images uploaded. You can also include a brief background description (50 words or less) related to the images and any special requirements.

• Candidates will be informed of the selections no later than September 15, 2022 by e-mail.

Works submitted for the Biennale must be available for the duration of the exhibition if selected. If submitting a proposal, representative working examples may be submitted if indicated on the image description list.

The work must be ready for exhibition. Artists are responsible for the delivery and pick-up of their works to and from the CMCA.
*To become an artist member, visit cmcanow.org/support/membership.
